05 December 2024 News

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Maria Angelieva, took part in the Ministerial Conference ‘One year of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza: Urgent Needs, Durable Solutions’, held in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, on 2 December 2024.

The conference was held under the auspices of President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with a focus on the provision of humanitarian assistance and early reconstruction efforts in Gaza. Delegations from more than 90 countries, international and non-governmental organizations took part in the event. At the beginning of the conference, speeches were made by Dr. Mohammad Mustafa, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine, Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Sigrid Kaag, Chief Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, etc.

In her speech Deputy Minister Angelieva stressed that Bulgaria remains committed to the international efforts to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The financial contribution of the Republic of Bulgaria to the activities of the World Health Organization, the Egyptian Red Crescent and the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization was pointed out. The readiness of the Bulgarian side by the end of the year to provide additional humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population through a voluntary contribution to the World Health Organization was also highlighted, as additional financial contributions to humanitarian organizations working in Gaza are foreseen for 2025.

Deputy Minister Angelieva drew attention to the fact that humanitarian aid should be seen only as a means of emergency assistance and not as a sustainable solution to the problem. In this sense, Bulgaria remains actively committed to promoting all international initiatives and efforts that lead to the establishment of lasting peace, security and stability in the region.

In the final part of her speech, Deputy Minister Angelieva expressed the principled and consistently followed position of the Bulgarian side, namely: that a just and lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through negotiations leading to the establishment of an independent and democratic Palestinian state living in peace, security and mutual recognition with the State of Israel.
