Marking the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls
26 November 2024 News
25 November marks the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls.
According to UN Women, nearly one in three women worldwide has been a victim of psychological and/or sexual violence at least once in her lifetime, and in 2023, more than 5000 women were killed by their partner or a family member.
These extremely worrying data show that the problem of violence against women and girls, in all its manifestations and spheres of life, needs a unified and unequivocal response from society and countries.
That’s why this year the UN’s global campaign ‘UNiTE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls!’ will be on the topic ‘Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed. No Excuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women’. As every year, the days between 25 November and 10 December, when we mark International Human Rights Day, will be days of activism against gender-based violence.
The Republic of Bulgaria, as a member state of the UN and the EU, and as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2024—2026, prioritises the combat against all forms of violence against women and girls. Protecting and guaranteeing the full enjoyment of the rights of women and girls, as well as their empowerment, remains a priority of Bulgarian foreign policy in the field of human rights.
