145th anniversary of the Bulgarian diplomatic service

19 July 2024 News

Today we celebrate 145 years since the establishment of the Bulgarian diplomatic service. On this date in 1879 Kniaz Alexander Battenberg appointed the first Bulgarian diplomats — Dragan Tsankov, Evlogi Georgiev and Dimitar Kirovich, who represented our country in Constantinople, Bucharest and Belgrade. Since then, generations of Bulgarian diplomats have worked tirelessly to establish Bulgaria as a reliable and respected partner on the international stage.

Since 1999, July 19 has been celebrated as a professional holiday of the Bulgarian diplomatic service, recognizing the work and merits of all those who have dedicated their lives to this important mission. Our diplomats actively contribute to the development of international cooperation, peace and security in the world. We are proud of their achievements, among which is the establishment of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria in Geneva — our oldest diplomatic mission in the field of multilateral inter-state relations. Nadezhda Stanchova, the first woman diplomat in the Balkans and in Europe, also played a significant role in the history of Bulgarian diplomacy, contributing significantly to the establishment of women in diplomacy.

Our diplomats will continue to follow in the footsteps of these great predecessors, working with dedication and professionalism for the good name of Bulgaria in the world.

Happy celebration to all who serve our country with pride and responsibility!
