The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Kondov held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Bulgaria H.E. Mr. Miguel Alonso Berrio. During the meeting, the constructive cooperation at bilateral level as well as the partnership on key issues on the European agenda and within NATO was noted. Current developments in Ukraine and the Middle East were discussed. The Bulgarian side expressed gratitude for the consistent and strong support during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU last year for Bulgaria's accession to Schengen. Spain’s position on supporting Bulgaria in terms of the main foreign policy priorities  — joining the euro area, the OECD, as well as the abolition of land border controls within the Schengen area was confirmed.

Deputy Minister Ivan Kondov expressed his gratitude for the permission received from the state authorities of Spain and the opportunity for the Bulgarian citizens in the country to vote in the upcoming early parliamentary elections and the elections to the European Parliament on 9 June 2024.

The two sides agreed on the desire to build on the active bilateral political dialogue at all levels, as well as economic cooperation, educational and cultural exchanges.
