18 October 2023 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel took part in an event on the occasion of 18 October - European Day for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings. The event is part of the continuation of the "Can you see me?" campaign and marks the beginning of a new series of screenings and information sessions for students and young people focusing on the groups most vulnerable to the risks of being involved in human trafficking and exploitation.

The organizers are the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (NCATB), of which Deputy Prime Minister Maria Gabriel is the chairperson, the A21 Campaign Foundation - Bulgaria and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Bulgaria.

"Human trafficking is a serious crime against the person, personal liberty and dignity of the human person. It continues to generate more revenue than the drugs and arms trade," Maria Gabriel said before the screening.

"No one is protected. I want to urge you to be vigilant, to ask questions. Everyone can give himself a chance by being critical, by not believing some of the good stories that sell dreams and break lives, but he can also help people who are around him," the deputy prime minister said.

Maria Gabriel thanked the school principals and teachers who are sensitive on the issue and want young people to be informed.

The short films "On the Beach" and "Ghost Town", written and directed by Christian Elliott, were presented at the event, followed by a discussion with teachers and students from schools in the capital about the risks young people face from becoming victims of human trafficking.

"Be ambassadors of the fight against human trafficking, because this is one of the noblest professions-ambassador, and when the cause is as noble as the fight against human trafficking, I believe it is worth it", was Maria Gabriel's message.
