12 May 2023 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Kondov participated today in Stockholm in an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers — in the so-called ‘Gymnich’ format.

Among the topics of the two working sessions of the informal meeting were the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and the EU's relations with China.

Ministers stressed the need for continued political and material support for Ukraine. In the context of the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, they discussed the different dimensions of the EU's long-term commitment to support Kiev, including the reconstruction of the country, the demand for international legal accountability for the crimes committed, assistance to the country's European integration, etc. Minister Kondov confirmed that Bulgaria is actively committed to the EU's efforts to continue its support to Ukraine.

A meeting with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba is also scheduled within the forum.

The EU foreign ministers also held a strategic discussion on EU-China relations.

On 13 May, the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs's visit to Stockholm continues with participation in the second EU-India-Pacific Ministerial Forum.

Today Minister Ivan Kondov also held a bilateral meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó. Both Ministers shared their excellent assessment of the development of bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Hungary as extremely close EU partners and NATO allies. Minister Szijjártó pointed out that Bulgaria is a key factor in guaranteeing Hungary's energy security and thanked that our country is a reliable transit country for natural gas supplies to Hungary. Issues of the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries were also discussed.
