The Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN, Ambassador Lachezara Stoeva, was elected as the Chairperson of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) for the period July 25, 2022 - July 26, 2023, during the plenary session of the Council on July 25.

In her opening speech, Ambassador Stoeva presented the priorities of her presidency, including the provision of guidelines for limiting and dealing with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Another top priority is strengthening the work of the UN and its partners to address the profound humanitarian challenges facing the international community.

Within the framework of her presidency, Ambassador Lachezara Stoeva will also work on the implementation of the recommendations adopted by the General Assembly in June 2021 to reform the work of ECOSOC and the High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development.

ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the United Nations. It has 54 member states. The Council is responsible for coordination, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues.
