The new Youth Representatives of Bulgaria to the UN with a mandate 2022-2023 are Victoria Savova and Tsvetelina Garelova. This became clear during the final fourth round of the national competition for the election of our youth delegates, which took place today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Director of the UN and Global Affairs Directorate, Ambassador Ivo Muskurov, and the President of the United Nations Association in Bulgaria welcomed the new pair of delegates during a ceremony.

Victoria Savova graduated with a BA in International Economic Relations from the University of National and World Economy and is a final year student at Cardiff Metropolitan University, MA in Business Administration. She has participated in a number of exchanges and trainings focused on human rights, integration of vulnerable groups and environmental protection and has been part of projects in the NGO AIESEC aimed at education and promoting youth employment.

Tsvetelina Garelova graduated in France. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and Humanities and a Master’s degree in International Management and Sustainable Development from the prestigious French academy Sciences Po. She is strongly interested in topics such as ecology, circular economy and social policies.  She has a background in integrating environmental, social and governance indicators. She is currently working with corporate reporting on sustainable practices.

In his address, Ambassador Vladimir Sotirov congratulated all eight finalists for their high competence. “It is a great pleasure to see such young and enthusiastic people. You are the generation that must find solutions and cope with the challenges of the modern world,” Sotirov said.

Ambassador Ivo Muskurov thanked the United Nations Association in Bulgaria and all the partner organizations, with whose cooperation this program is implemented. “For the 16th consecutive year, the “Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN” programme is coordinated by the United Nations Association in Bulgaria in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bulgaria is among only 40 countries that sustainably develop such a programme and is a leader among them”, further said Ambassador Muskurov.

Our new youth representatives to the UN were selected after a 3-month selection procedure in 4 rounds. The eight finalists presented a draft speech as well as their motivation for their future mandate to a 13-member committee. The committee was composed of representatives of the UN and Global Affairs Directorate, the Foreign Policy Planning, Information and Coordination Directorate and the Human Rights Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a representative of the Diplomatic Institute to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, representatives of the UN Society in Bulgaria, the National Youth Card Association, the Association for Support of the Academic Society and the Bulgarian Platform for International Development, as well as youth delegates from previous years.

The two Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN have a mandate of 18 months and are part of our country’s delegation to the UN General Assembly and the Commission on Social Development of the UN Economic and Social Council.

The programme “Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN” is coordinated by the United Nations Association in Bulgaria with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. The position of youth delegate to the UN exists in about 40 countries around the world. With the programme, Bulgaria ranks among the leading countries in the world and Europe that recognise young people as equal partners in decision-making processes at national and international level.
