30 March 2022 News

On 30 March 2022, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted bilateral political consultations between the Republic of Bulgaria and Canada at Director-General-Level. The talks on the Bulgarian side were led by Mrs Maya Dobreva, Director General for Political Affairs. The Canadian delegation was led by Mr Robert Fry, Director General for European Affairs at the Department of Global Affairs of Canada.

A comprehensive review of the bilateral Bulgarian-Canadian relations was carried out and the discussion focused on the prospects for deepening the fruitful cooperation between the two countries in all areas of mutual interest. The need to establish a regular political dialogue between the two countries was highlighted, with the political consultations - the first of their kind for several years - forming a solid basis for further joint work.

The agenda of the event included separate thematic segments dedicated to the bilateral relations and political dialogue; trade and economic relations and investment opportunities; NATO cooperation and the EU-Canada partnership in the field of security and defence; European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries; cooperation between Bulgaria and Canada in the field of human rights, diversity and inclusion, etc.

Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, the political, economic and humanitarian dimensions of the crisis were also discussed. The regional and global impact of the conflict was discussed and the Canadian side expressed appreciation for Bulgaria’s efforts to provide support and reception in the country of Ukrainian citizens seeking protection and asylum from the war.
