Deputy Foreign Minister Vasil Georgiev meets with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi

Deputy Foreign Minister Vasil Georgiev met today with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, who is on a working visit to Bulgaria.

During the talks, the European perspective of the Western Balkans and the current developments in the relations between Bulgaria and the Republic of Northern Macedonia were discussed.

Bulgaria remains consistent in its support for the European integration of the region, leading in this process are the principle of its own merits and respect for the fundamental values of the Union, including good neighborliness.

Regarding the prospect of EU membership of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Deputy Minister Georgiev stressed that our country retains its position. For us, it is not the deadlines that are decisive, but the achievement of real results in the implementation of the Neighborhood Agreement of 2017, as well as binding guarantees for its implementation in the enlargement process. Sofia remains committed to dialogue with Skopje, aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions to outstanding issues.
