Position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

03 February 2022 News

Regarding the recent public statements of the Co-chair of the Joint Committee on Historical and Educational Affairs of the Republic of Northern Macedonia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated:

The work of the Joint Committee on Historical and Educational Affairs continues to be essential for the development of bilateral relations.

Its work is one of the most important elements of the implementation of the 2017 Treaty and aims to gradually overcome the stereotypes of the past. The common understanding of the two sides on the key importance of the work of the Commission and the achievement of concrete results was emphasized at the meeting of the governments on January 25, 2022 in Sofia.

As independent scientists and experts, as well as citizens of democratic societies, Commissioners have the right to express their views publicly. However, this does not bind the governments of the two countries to take certain decisions and should not be interpreted as a proposal of one of the two countries.

We support the readiness of the two Co-chairs on 25 January 2022 to step up contacts with the Commission. We call on its members to dynamic and productive work in the interest of the citizens of Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia.

It is important that politicians on both sides publicly support the Commission's efforts and activities, including by jointly celebrating important figures and events in our common history.
