“Bulgaria and Latvia have many similarities. Both countries went through difficult financial crises, and at the cost of much effort at political level, their disciplined economic management today is an example of fiscal discipline in the EU,” Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said at a joint news conference today after talks with his Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The two ministers discussed co-operation within the EU and underlined the positions taken by the two countries, including on negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework. “The question is not only how much money to devote to enable our countries to catch up in their development, but also the benefit to all the countries in Europe,” Minister Mladenov said.
Minister Rinkēvičs reiterated Latvia’s support for Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen. Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister said: “Bulgaria has fulfilled all the criteria. We have always insisted that our country should be judged on its achievements”.
