Nickolay Mladenov met US Coordinator for Counterterrorism

Cooperation in security is the basis of the partnership between Bulgaria and the United States, Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said at a meeting with Ambassador Daniel Benjamin, Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the State Department. They discussed the fight against terrorism and co-operation in this area.
The topics of the meeting included the attack at Sarafovo Airport in which five Israelis and a Bulgarian citizen were killed. Minister Mladenov said that the investigation into the tragic incident was continuing and Bulgarian officials hoped to complete it in the shortest possible time.
The two discussed developments in Syria, sharing the view that the only way out of the crisis is the withdrawal of Bashar Assad from power and for the country to embark on the path of democratic reforms. Miniser Mladenov underlined the importance of strengthening international pressure on the Syrian regime, including by imposing new sanctions.
