13 May 2019 News

SOFIA. - For another year in a row Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva gave her patronage to the already traditional diplomatic football tournament ‘Ambassadors’ League’, organized by the UN Association of Bulgaria with the charitable goal of conducting a ‘Human rights school’.

Ekaterina Zaharieva saluted the initiative and its noble cause.  ‘Having this sports contest enables people from different countries and continents, of different religions and cultures, to unite around their shared values in a spirit of understanding and sportsmanship. This initiative of the UN Association of Bulgaria is an example of how diplomacy through sports helps bridge differences,’ said the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in her message of greetings to the participants and organizers.

Participating in the tournament, which took place on the pitches of the Boyana National Football Facility, were teams from the embassies of Armenia, the United Arab Emirates, Romania, North Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the Netherlands, as well as representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Bulgaria, UNICEF Bulgaria, the International Migration Organization, the Student Association of International Relations Studies (SAIRS) and the UN Association of Bulgaria.

Ultimately, the SAIRS team won and received the Cup of the Tournament. The Turkish Embassy team took second place, and that of North Macedonia came in third.

The event, which turned into a sports celebration for all present, made everyone a winner, as victory was the reward for the participants’ joint efforts.
