Chinary Ensemble Captivates Guests at Bulgarian Show in Rome’s Capitoline Square

29 May 2018 News

Hundreds of spectators flocked to Rome’s Capitoline Square on 28 May 2018 for a show entitled “Discover Bulgaria”, highlighting Bulgaria’s contribution to European culture. The event was part of the cultural programme of the Bulgarian Embassy in Rome, financed under the Communication Plan of the Bulgarian EU Presidency.

Musicians and dancers of the Chinary Ensemble were the first to perform. They presented a thrilling journey outlining Bulgaria’s contribution to Europe’s culture and identity. The Cyrillic alphabet came to life in a 3D mapping show projected on the façade of Rome’s City Hall, telling how the Bulgarian script helped to spread Christianity among the Eastern Slavs. The light show is the work of Bulgaria’s MP Studio, which has won numerous international awards for staging displays onto landmark buildings in Europe. The soundtrack of the show featured pieces from BooCheeMish, the latest album of The Mystery Of The Bulgarian Voices, whose worldwide premiere took place on 25 May. The music is composed by Petar Dundakov, and the recordings feature Australian singer and composer Lisa Gerrard.

The event was opened by Culture Minister Boil Banov and the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Italy Marin Raykov. Italian Senate Vice President Paola Taverna, Carola Penna, President of the Roma Capitale Committee on Tourism, Fashion, Events and International Relations Commission, also welcomed those present.

Mayors Ivan Totev of Plovdiv and Raffaello De Ruggieri of Matera (the Bulgarian and the Italian cities that will be European Capitals of Culture in 2019) were special guests at the show.

The initiative was organised jointly with the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Rome in partnership with Roma Capitale and Plovdiv Municipality, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and UniCredit Bulbank.
