Romanian has no territorial claims in regard to Bulgaria, Romanian Ambassador Anton Pacuretu has assured the Foreign Ministry at a meeting

22 March 2012 News

At the invitation of Deputy Minister Dimitar Tzantchev, a meeting was held at the Foreign Ministry with the Ambassador of Romania, Anton Pacuretu.

The Bulgarian side expressed its dismay at the statement by Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu reported by local media regarding negotiations on the territorial delimitation of the Black Sea area.

The interpretation that territorial claims might exist between the two countries is dangerous and inconsistent with the spirit of the two countries' common membership of the EU, Deputy Minister Tzantchev said.

In response, Ambassador Pacuretu emphasised that Romania has no territorial claims on Bulgaria and he described what had happened as a misunderstanding. He dwelt on the long history of negotiations and said that he surprised by the fact that they had become a media event.

Saying that Bulgaria could not accept allegations regarding the Romanian ethnic minority, Deputy Minister Tzantchev emphasised that such statements were not in the interest of good neigbourly relations between the two countries. He reiterated that this issue had not been raised at the joint meeting of the two governments.

Bulgarian citizens of Romanian identity form a spiritual bridge between the two countries, Ambassador Pacuretu said in response, adding that they had no problems in Bulgaria.
