Bulgaria and Turkey support the aspirations of the Arab peoples to freedom and democracy

Bulgaria and Turkey support the aspirations of the Arab peoples to freedom and democracy. Fundamental human rights, freedom, justice, democracy and dignity are universal human values that all members of the international community have a primary obligation and responsibility to protect. Both countries appeal for an international effort for an immediate end to the bloodshed in Syria and for dialogue and a transition to democracy in the Arab country. In this regard the upcoming meeting of the "Friends of Syria" group, which will be held in Istanbul, will be significant.

The two neighbouring countries will closely co-operate within NATO, in the development of missile defence, intended to ensure the security of all countries of the Alliance, and in the operation in Afghanistan. Bulgaria and Turkey welcomed the progress made by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the country and fully support the new government in Sarajevo in the implementation of necessary reforms.

This was said in a joint statement by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoğlu. The two ministers met today in the framework of the joint meeting in Ankara of the Bulgarian and Turkish governments.
