Slovenia to introduce a new electronic toll tax system for vehicles over 3.5 tons on its speedways

09 February 2018 News

As from April 1, 2018, the Republic of Slovenia is to introduce a new electronic system for toll collection from vehicles with a gross weight of 3.5 tons or over driving on its speedways.

Following that date, no toll will be paid at toll collection booths, nor will DARS electronic cards or ABC devices be used anymore. Each heavy vehicle will need to register in order to use the DarsGo system and must be fitted out with a DarsGo device that automatically calculates the toll due.

To date, in order to register and obtain a DarsGo device, the vehicle owner must go to a DarsGo service center. In the near future, it will also be possible to register at a gas station.

Users of the DarsGo system are advised to register at an early convenience in order to avoid the expected waiting lines for registration once the new system takes effect. Drivers will be able to pay toll using the present system until March 31, 2018, inclusive. DARS will not provide a ‘grace period’. To avoid confusion, the old and the new system of driving across the Republic of Slovenia will not operate in parallel.

The Slovenian authorities emphasize that an omission to register in due course and to have the electronic device installed on the vehicle will be punishable by a fine for non-compliance imposed both on the driver of the bus or heavy truck, and on the owner of the transport company operating the vehicle.

Information about how to obtain a DarsGo device can be accessed on the websites www.darsgo.si and www.darsgo.si, as well as on e-mail [email protected].
