Georg Georgiev: ‘Parliamentary cooperation between Bulgaria and Canada is of major importance for bilateral relations’

07 December 2017 News

“The establishment of a Canada-Bulgaria Friendship Group in the Parliament of Canada is a step towards broadening bilateral parliamentary cooperation which boosts relations in many spheres,” Deputy Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said before representatives of the Group. He met the Canadian MPs within his working visit to Canada. The Canada-Bulgaria Friendship Group in the Parliament of Canada was established in 2014.

During the talks Deputy Minister Georgiev said that the lifting of Canada's visa requirements for Bulgarian nationals as of 1 December 2017 and the preliminary application of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will have an exceptionally favourable effect on bilateral trade and economic contacts. In his words, the Bulgarian community in Canada of around 80,000 persons also contributes significantly to the bilateral friendship.

"We highly appreciate the Canada-Bulgaria Friendship Group's support for the project for getting Bulgarian language recognized as a credit for high school graduates in British Columbia," Georg Georgiev also said. He added that the inclusion of Bulgarian in the programme of the provincial ministry of education will elevate the language's status.

On her part, Canada-Bulgaria Friendship Group Co-Chair Joanna Martin said she is willing to organize a visit of a Canadian parliamentary delegation to Sofia in April-May 2018 in relation to the Bulgarian EU Council Presidency.
