Bulgaria and the US are strategic partners and allies

07 February 2012 News

The active contacts in recent days are evidence of the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States and the maintenance of positive and dynamic bilateral relations. They are part of a series of visits by representatives of the US administration, starting with the visit by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Bulgaria on February 5 2012. This was said by Deputy Foreign Minister Dimiter Tzantchev at a meeting today with Marie Yovanovitch, Deputy Assistant US Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, and James Townsend, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for European and NATO Policy.

The matters discussed at today’s meeting included bilateral co-operation in defence, co-operation between Bulgaria and the United States in Afghanistan and the Western Balkans, the upcoming May 2012 NATO summit in Chicago, and the situation in the region of Middle East and North Africa.

Particular attention was focused on the theme of the current situation in Syria. Participants in the meeting agreed on the proposition that it is vital that the efforts of the international community focus on measures to overcome the difficult situation in the country and protect civilians.

The meeting was attended by Major-General Mark Schissler of US European Command and US Ambassador to Bulgaria HE James Warlick.
