Bulgaria is an example to European countries in fiscal discipline

06 February 2012 News

“It is essential for the EU at this moment to ensure proper functioning of the single market, to come up with real measures to increase employment in Europe, economic competitivness and financial stability. The path to this will be built in the new financial framework that will determine how the EU will have the strength to achieve the objectives it pursues, becoming the most competitive economy in the world,” Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said after meeting David Lidington, United Kingdom Minister for European Affairs.

As Europe seeks measures to deal with the crisis, it is important to identify the reasons for it, Minister Mladenov said.
Despite what some say, enlargement of the EU was not the reason for a lack of financial discipline and non-compliance by some member states, he emphasised. Mladenov said that it was the adoption of new countries into the European family that could lead to greater economic competitiveness.

Minister Lidington said that “many countries can envy Bulgaria its good financial discipline. The Bulgarian Government is an example in this respect to other member states.
He expressed support to his Bulgarian colleague, emphasising the importance of the continuation of the European integration of the countries of the Western Balkans.

Foreign Minister Mladenov said that Europe should support the initiatives of the people of the Middle East and North Africa in their quest for a peaceful and free life, with institutions that protect their rights.
“All of us who are friends of a democratic Syria can work actively in this direction, supporting the initiative by the Arab League and Gulf countries to start consultations on measures to ensure peaceful transition and address the humanitarian crisis in the country,” Minister Mladenov emphasised.
