“I absolutely do not agree with the position of the Government of the Netherlands in regard to Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen zone,” Frans Timmermans, spokesman on foreign policy of the Labour Party in the Dutch Parliament, said during a meeting today with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov.

Minister Mladenov noted the efforts made by Timmermans for Bulgaria during negotiations on accession to the EU. He expressed hope that soon the question of Schengen accession would be decided positively.

Timmermans’ visit to Bulgaria is part of a tour he is making of the region to ensure support for his candidacy to become Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe. He explained that his priority as Commissioner would be to assist Member States to better implement in practice the legislation adopted by the Council of Europe.
