Minister Mitov held a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Anifah Aman
29 March 2016 News"The relations between Bulgaria and Malaysia can be further developed and expanded in the context of Bulgaria's membership in the EU, under the increased partnership between EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and other multilateral formats," Minister Daniel Mitov said at the meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Anifah Aman. The meeting took place within the framework of the official visit of the Bulgarian Foreign Minister in Kuala Lumpur.
“I would like to welcome the active role of Malaysia on regional and global scale, as an active member of ASEAN, and as a non-permanent member of the United Nation's Security Council in 2015-2016,” said Minister Mitov. He noted that Malaysia is an important partner of the EU in Southeast Asia, saying that Bulgaria supports the negotiation on signing a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and a Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Malaysia. The negotiations on both agreements were launched in late 2010 and are ongoing.
The two foreign ministers concurred that Bulgaria and Malaysia highly value the friendly bilateral relations and are committed to do their best to intensify the political dialogue which will further the cooperation in all areas of mutual interest. “Bulgaria attaches priority importance to the trade and economic relations with Malaysia, taking into account the fact that the country is one of the fastest developing economies in Southeast Asia,” he said, adding that our country welcomes the Malaysian investments in the country. Minister Mitov emphasized that Bulgaria offers traditional goods for export to Malaysia, including foods, wines, milk and dairy products, mineral water, essential oils, rose oil in particular, products of the mechanical engineering and electric engineering.
The two diplomats discussed also topics on the international agenda, including the situation in the Middle East. Minister Mitov reiterated that DAESH can only be defeated by joint efforts, combined with international measures to stabilize the Middle East. "The Balkans and other neighboring regions are particularly vulnerable because of their proximity to points of conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf, and because of its multicultural character and historical remnants," he said.
At a special event organized earlier by the Malaysian organization for international trade, Daniel Mitov presented Bulgaria as an attractive destination to local entrepreneurs. He conferred the Golden Laurel Bough award of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry to the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Malaysia Stephen Soh.
During the visit Minister Mitov also conferred with the Speaker of the lower house of the Parliament of Malaysia, Pandikar Amin Mulia.
