Minister Daniel Mitov meets with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani

20 December 2015 News

Minister Daniel Mitov met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Hassan Rouhani in Tehran and the talks took place within the two-day official visit of the Bulgarian Foreign Minister to the Iranian capital.

The talks focused on the good cooperation between the two countries, ways to develop the gas and transport corridors from the Islamic Republic to Europe, the Middle East crisis and the refugee flow.

"Bulgaria attaches a great importance to its relations with Iran. Our geographical proximity and traditionally good contacts account for our interest in a steady increase and improvement of the bilateral dialogue," Minister Mitov said. For his part, Dr. Rouhani said that Bulgaria is Iran's close and reliable friend.

The Syrian crisis was also on the agenda of the meeting. Foreign Minister Mitov reiterated that Syria's territorial integrity should be preserved and the conflict should be settled with the countries of the region playing the leading role.

He also emphasized Bulgaria's position on reaching agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear programme. "We welcome the agreement and hope it will be implemented as soon as possible." This will open up new opportunities for developing bilateral relations between Iran and Bulgaria, and between Iran and the EU.

Earlier that day Minister Mitov visited the School of International Relations run by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and delivered a lecture on Bulgaria's view on the challenges and opportunities in the Middle East.
