The Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of South Africa are traditionally good partners and for decades they maintain stable and friendly relations, agreed at today's meeting Minister Daniel Mitov and Vanessa Calvert, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Africa to Bulgaria.

"For us South Africa is an important strategic partner in the South African region and the continent as a whole. The bilateral relations are developing upstream and reveal opportunities for fruitful cooperation in all fields of mutual interest," said Minister Mitov. Bulgaria’s top diplomat emphasized the need to intensify trade and economic relations between Bulgaria and South Africa thus utilizing the untapped potential. They identified priority areas of cooperation such as science, education, tourism, defense and agriculture.

During the conversation, Minister Mitov called for consistent work on the extension of the contractual and legal base of cooperation stressing the need for a swift signing of a Mutual legal assistance treaty between the two countries. On her part, Ambassador Calvert expressed readiness to actively cooperate on the issue, saying that the renegotiation of the institutional framework would contribute to the strengthening and deepening of bilateral contacts.

Bulgaria is a friendly country and we share historical and cultural ties, said Ambassador Calvert, adding that the big Bulgarian community in South Africa supports and enriches the strong relationship between the two countries. Minister Mitov and Ambassador Calvert underscored the need to strengthen the high-level dialogue and agreed to exchange visits in the near future.
