Bulgarians on board the Ocean Star Pacific ...

04 August 2012

Twelve of the Bulgarian sailors on the Ocean Star Pacific who were not paid their salaries by their employer have decided of their own free will to remain aboard.

The cruise ship, which flies the Panamanian flag, has been in the Mexican port of Matsatlan for more than two months with a crew of 90 people. Immediately after being alerted to the problems between the ship’s personnel and the employer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Situation Centre, jointly with the Maritime Administration Executive Agency and the Bulgarian Embassies in Mexico City and in London, took steps to resolve the case.

Following this intervention, seven Bulgarians returned to Bulgaria on July 26 after requesting to do so. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with the other Bulgarians on board and with their employer and will continue, with the other responsible institutions and the International Transport Workers’ Federation, to provide the necessary assistance to resolve the case.
