Severe winter conditions in the Balkans
06 February 2012
Because of the heavy snowfall and prolonged cold spell, with temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius yesterday, the Serbian government declared an emergency throughout the country.
About 5000km of secondary and local roads are impassable.
There is also a disaster situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Snow in places exceeds 1.5m and temperatures fell to minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
The road situation in some regions of Montenegro and of Croatia is also very difficult.
The Foreign Ministry recommends that Bulgarian citizens do not attempt a journey, unless in extreme necessity, until the situation in the region has stabilised.
