Emergency situation in Romania

26 January 2012

Because of bad weather - storms and heavy snowfall – the situation in southern and southeastern Romania is particularly critical. Code Red has been declared. Main roads have been blocked, including in parts of the capital Bucharest.

Flights from Henri Coanda and Baneasa airports are limited by severe weather conditions. Domestic and international flights have been cancelled.

The Crisis Center of the Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of Bulgaria in Bucharest are keeping in touch with dozens of Bulgarian citizens in distress.

There has been coordination with travel agencies, municipalities and Romanian police in the affected areas, and with the Crisis Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania.

According to information provided by the Romanian authorities, equipment for snow removal and the recovery of stranded vehicles was mobilised on the morning January 26 2012.

We recommend that Bulgarian citizens not travel to southern and southeastern Romania.
