Bulgaria and the UN Population Fund to promote cooperation in order to establish good practices in the region

27 May 2015 News

The demographic situation both in Bulgaria and many developed countries is complicated and, therefore, a serious approach and special programmes are needed in this sphere. Bulgaria is well aware of the challenges and the government is committed to work on these issues, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said at a meeting with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Deputy Executive Director Kate Gilmore. Gilmore is in Sofia to take part in the Regional Conference "Promoting Health and Rights, Reducing Inequalities: Towards Better Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes in Eastern Europeand Central Asia".

The Foreign Minister praised Bulgaria's cooperation with UNFPA and expressed hope that the number of joint initiatives will increase. He recalled that Bulgaria has already taken up the SEECP Chairmanship-in-Office and could add addressing demographic problems and healthcare to the identified priorities.

Kate Gilmore noted that the initiatives of the National Center for Public Health and Analysis at the Ministry of Health are examples of excellent practices that can be used globally. Minister Mitov and the guest were unanimous that the joint work with the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER) and the implementation of the Y-PEER PETRI-Sofia initiative are affirmation of the good ties between Bulgaria and UNFPA.

Kate Gilmore said that Bulgaria sets an example of the active involvement of young people in public life, adding that in this field Bulgaria is a leader in the region.  They shared the opinion that the involvement of young people in active politics and strengthening the dialogue between different generations can be used to counter the threat of radicalization among adolescents. Extremism adapts very quickly to current trends and to safeguard its security, the rest of the world must do the same. Bulgaria's experience can be very useful for the region, said Kate Gilmore.
