Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania back plans to interlink gas grids

The foreign ministers of Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania signed on 21 May in Riga Memorandum on cooperation in connecting national gas transmission networks, developing gas interconnections and securing reversible capacity of the gas. The ceremony took place in the framework of the ongoing in the Latvian capital Eastern Partnership Summit.

The Memorandum is an expression of the political support of the four countries support for interconnection of the existing gas infrastructure of Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. The document is based on the awareness of the need for efficient use and development of existing infrastructure, diversification of natural gas sources and routes for stable and uninterrupted supplies to Central and Southeastern Europe. This act is part of the countries’ efforts to implement the strategic goal of establishing Energy Union.

According to the Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov, this document is in line with the efforts to build the Vertical Gas Corridor and an important new step in the development of cooperation that guarantees the energy security of Central and Southeastern Europe.
