Meeting of Minister Daniel Mitov and the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq

Bulgaria and Iraq have developed long-standing friendship and cooperation and I hope that together we will manage to enrich the relations between our two countries in all spheres of mutual interest. With these words Minister Daniel Mitov welcomed today at the MFA the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Sofia Kahtan Taha Khalaf Al Janabi.
The two diplomats exchanged views on the extremely complicated situation in the Middle East and expressed willingness to continue the joint efforts in the fight against the so-called Islamic State. Minister Mitov expressed concern over the deteriorating security in the region, which represents a threat not only to Iraq, but to the EU as a whole. "We express our full support for the efforts of the Iraqi government to dislodge ISIS from areas under their control and to achieve an inclusive political dialogue," the Foreign Minister said.
Ambassador Al Janabi thanked the Bulgarian government for the assistance in the fight against terrorism and expressed hope that a peaceful solution to the crisis in the region will be achieved with the help of Bulgaria and the international community, which will reduce the refugee pressure on EU countries. Minister Mitov expressed hope for an early finalization and approval of the proposed draft Memorandum and Agreement on readmission and the fight against organized crime between Bulgaria and Iraq.
Daniel Mitov and Kahtan Taha Khalaf Al Janabi discussed also ways for deepening the bilateral dialogue in the economic field, sharing the opinion that the good political relations are basis of even stronger presence of Bulgarian companies and implementation of infrastructure projects in Iraq.
They emphasized the importance of the intensive dialogue at a high political level, and the Bulgarian Foreign invited his Iraqi counterpart to visit our country. As an affirmation of the friendship with Bulgaria, Ambassador Al Janabi gave as a present to Minister Mitov the Code of Hammurabi, which contains one of the earliest texts of ancient Mesopotamia.
