Bulgaria does not recognize the so-called treaty between the Russian Federation and the self-proclaimed "Republic of South Ossetia"

18 March 2015 News

Statement by the Spokesperson of the MFA

The so-called "alliance and integration" treaty between the Russian Federation and the self-proclaimed "Republic of South Ossetia", signed in Moscow on 18 March 2015, is a cause for deep concern for the Republic of Bulgaria regarding the development of the process towards lasting settlement of the conflict hot spots in Georgia and the region.

This document violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and the principles of international law, contradicts the international commitments undertaken by the Russian Federation, and, like the similar document signed with the breakaway Abkhazia in November 2014, has no legal force.

Bulgaria does not recognise Georgia’s breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.
