Bulgaria reiterates its commitment to the nuclear disarmament, in accordance with Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and in this context we share the concern in regard to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that could occur as a result of possible use of nuclear weapons or incidents with such devices. Bulgaria’s position was expressed at the Third Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons, held on 8-9 December in Vienna. At the forum our country was represented by Dragomir Zakov, Head of "Arms Control and Non-Proliferation" Department at the Foreign Ministry.
Nuclear disarmament is only possible through constructive engagement with those states that are in possession of nuclear weapons, and addressing both the security and humanitarian aspects of nuclear weapons, says the statement.
Bulgaria shares the need for a constructive and realistic approach to nuclear disarmament which requires agreeing on effective and implementable measures that will strengthen the international disarmament and non-proliferation regime, such as unblocking the Conference on Disarmament and adapting its membership to the realities, bringing into force the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, starting negotiations on Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty.
