Minister Daniel Mitov participated in the meeting of the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on 3 December at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The event was organized by the USA and chaired by the Secretary of State John Kerry. Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Iraq and Head of the UN mission in the country, Nickolay Mladenov, addressed the plenary meeting. The coalition exists for nearly three months and this is the first ministerial-level plenary session to discuss the political mechanisms to counter ISIL.
The members of the coalition, including more than 62 countries and entities, agreed that "significant work" is yet to be done. In the short term we will continue to strike targets in Syria, expand training missions for Iraqi Security Forces and continue the air strikes as necessary, said Secretary of State John Kerry. There are many ways each of the countries can contribute to the work of this coalition and the United States is constantly looking for the means to enhance its effectiveness, he said.
Conference participants overviewed the multiple lines of effort they should focus on: supporting military operations, capacity building, and training, stopping the flow of foreign terrorist fighters, cutting off access to financing and ideological delegitimization of ISIL, addressing associated humanitarian relief and crises.
"One outcome of this meeting will be a statement that encompasses our message that we are united in moving ahead on all fronts and that we will engage in this campaign for as long as it takes to prevail," said in his address Secretary of State Kerry.
