NATO enlargement has an undeniable contribution to the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic area

04 September 2014 News

The contribution of NATO enlargement to the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic area is undeniable. The clear perspective for membership in the Alliance, particularly in light of current developments in Ukraine, serves as a stabilizing factor and the Balkan region is one of the best examples in this regard, said Minister Daniel Mitov in his statement at today's foreign ministerial meeting of the North Atlantic Council and the candidate member states: Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Georgia.

Minister Mitov pointed out the significant progress of Montenegro in the Euro-Atlantic integration process since the 2012 Chicago Summit, the positive results in the efforts to raise public support for Montenegro’s membership in the Alliance, as well as the progress in the reforms of the security services. We are confident that Montenegro will show the same determination and overcome the last outstanding issues. Montenegro has already proved itself as reliable partner of the Alliance with its contribution to NATO-led operations and by aligning itself with the position of the Alliance on the crisis in Ukraine, said the Bulgarian Foreign Minister.

As regards Georgia,  Minister Mitov reiterated Bulgaria's support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We value its firm determination to fulfil all the requirements to join the Alliance by demonstrating repeatedly its commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, he said, noting its contribution to ISAF, its significant commitment to NATO’s future mission in Afghanistan and its participation in the NATO Response Force.

According to the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, the substantial NATO-Georgia package to be endorsed tomorrow by the Heads of States and Governments of NATO member states will help Georgia prepare for membership. We will continue to work actively through the NATO-Georgia Commission and the Annual National Programme to effectively assist Georgia for membership, he added.

Minister Daniel Mitov called on the governments of the Republic of Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to double their efforts to solve the outstanding issues so as to continue their integration in the Alliance. As important issues for the Republic of Macedonia he identified achieving  progress on the name issue, as well as demonstrating genuine adherence to good neighbourly relations. Progress in this area will demonstrate the commitment of the Republic of Macedonia to the shared values, principles and standards, he said.

The Bulgarian top diplomat expressed hope that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be able to timely solve the military real estate registration issue. We expect the country’s further commitment to implementing wide ranging reforms, including but not limited to combating corruption and organized crime, strengthening democratic values, the rule of law, human rights and media freedom, Minister Mitov said.

In conclusion, Daniel Mitov welcomed the participation of the  four aspirants in the inauguration meeting of the Interoperability Platform. This is both a recognition for their efforts in that direction, and a commitment on behalf of NATO to continue its political and practical support. We encourage all aspirants to make the best use of this new mechanism, he said.

NATO foreign ministers agreed on the strategic importance of the Open Door Policy and noted the contribution of the enlargement to the stability and democratic transition of the aspirants.

They welcomed the progress made by the four aspirants, as well as their support and participation in various NATO operations.  They also reaffirmed  that the accession process is conducted in accordance with the real performance of the candidate countreis. It was emphasized that each candidate must fulfill the established criteria in order to achieve full time membership.

Foreign ministers expressed general concern over the deteriorating security situation internationally caused by the crisis in Ukraine and the actions of the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" in Syria and Iraq.
