Minister Daniel Mitov held talks with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands

28 August 2014 News

Minister Daniel Mitov met today with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Sofia Tom van Oorschot. They discussed bilateral relations and current issues on the European agenda. Among the topics of conversation were the prospects for development of the economic relations between the two countries, the active bilateral police cooperation, as well as Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen area. We are aware of the need for urgent reforms in several sectors. Although the mandate of the caretaker cabinet is limited, our efforts in that direction are aimed at laying the foundations for the work of the next government, said Minister Mitov.

As regards the forthcoming European Council on 30 August, they exchanged views on the expectations from the new European Commission. Minister Mitov and Ambassador van Oorschot  agreed that in view of the growing Euroscepticism, the next EC should have clear priorities and a program in order to make the EU stronger. On the nomination of Kristalina Georgieva for a second term as a member of the Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Minister Mitov expressed confidence that she is an excellent nomination. We understand that the result does not depend entirely on the personal qualities of Commissioner Georgieva, but we are convinced that she deserves to play an important role in the next Commission, he said.

Minister Mitov and Ambassador van Oorschot expressed concern over the situation in Ukraine. They shared the view that all the necessary steps should be made in order to complete the investigation of the tragedy with the downed plane that killed many Dutch citizens.

I hope that after yesterday’s talks in Minsk we will be able to find a peaceful solution to the confrontation. We call once again on Russia to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the Foreign Minister said. Its development should be of an independent country that freely determines its own future, he added.
