21 February 2014 News

Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin met with the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva. The main topics of conversation were current issues on the international agenda, as well as the latest developments in Ukraine, the situation in Syria, the Central African Republic and others.

With regard to the events in Ukraine, Minister Vigenin and Commissioner Georgieva shared the hope that today’s decisions will lead to a lasting ease of tensions. Hopefully the deal signed between President Yanukovych and the opposition will stop the bloodshed and prevent the radical elements from negatively influencing the situation, commented the Foreign Minister. Commissioner Georgieva emphasized that the European Commission is ready to assist the Red Cross in providing stocks of medicines and medical equipment to those affected by the violence.

Kristian Vigenin and Kristalina Georgieva discussed also the humanitarian situation in Syria. It is important to ensure humanitarian access to the Syrian territory, because otherwise the refugee problem will become even more acute, said Commissioner Georgieva. In this regard, the Foreign Minister and the European Commissioner expressed hope for success in the upcoming negotiations tomorrow in the Security Council, which will consider a draft resolution on the access of humanitarian workers to those in need in Syria.
