Statement of the Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin on the new escalation of tensions in Ukraine

19 February 2014 News

Bulgaria strongly condemns the acts of violence in Kiev, which resulted in dozens of casualties and many wounded. The grave new escalation in Ukraine is moving the country further away from achieving an acceptable political solution.

We believe that the President and the political leaders in Ukraine should approach the situation with all the necessary political responsibility and to find a way out of the grave crisis in the country through dialogue. They should not allow crossing the point where the return to the political process would become unachievable.

We urge all those involved in the conflict to be guided by respect for human rights, civil liberties and the will of the Ukrainian people, in order to create conditions for a lasting solution to the real problems of the Ukrainian society.

We reiterate the position of the EU Foreign Ministers from 10 February 2014 that the solution should include the formation of a new inclusive government, progress on constitutional reform, ehich will restore the balance between the separate powers, and the preparation for transparent and democratic presidential elections.

We urge the Ukrainian authorities to take advantage of the already proposed assistance from the EU, OSCE, Council of Europe and other international organizations.

We are ready with our partners from the European Union to urgently discuss the situation in Ukraine in order to help find a workable solution to the crisis in the country.
