12 member states urged the EC not to allow the cultivation of genetically modified maize

13 February 2014 News

Minister Kristian Vigenin, together with the ministers of foreign affairs and the European affairs ministers of 11 member states sent a joint letter to the Commissioner for Health Tonio Borg calling the Commission to review its draft decision authorizing the cultivation of genetically modified maize on EU’s territory.

The letter recalls the outcome of the discussion on this issue at the General Affairs Council meeting on 11 February, when 19 member states opposed the approval of the cultivation of genetically modified maize on EU’s territory.

We believe that the Commission can not ignore the legal, political and scientific concerns raised by so many member states. The position of the European Parliament is also negative, says the letter to the Commissioner for Health.

Among the signatories of the letter are the ministers of foreign affairs and European affairs of Austria, Bulgaria, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, France, Hungary.
