Bulgarian-Azerbaijani political consultations

The first political consultations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Azerbaijan at the level of deputy foreign ministers took place on 5 February in Sofia. From the Bulgarian side, the consultations were led by Deputy Minister Angel Velitchkov and from theAzerbaijani by Deputy Minister Khalaf Khalafov.

Besides a full review of the current state of the bilateral relations in the political sphere, the main topics of the consultations involved energy security, cooperation in the fields of economy and education, as well as regional issues of mutual interest.

During the talks,tourism and agriculture were identified as highly perspective areas of cooperation. The opportunities for Azerbaijani companies to invest in the tourism sector in Bulgaria were also discussed. In view of establishing more active contacts between the two countries and attracting more tourists from Azerbaijan, the option of opening an airline between Sofia and Baku was also reviewed.

During the discussions, the importance of holding a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in 2014 was emphasized, as well as organizing Bulgarian Days of Culture in Azerbaijan.
