Bulgaria supports the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons

15 January 2014 News

Bulgaria supports the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons. The government has adopted a decision to make a contribution of 200 thousand leva to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Special Trust Fund, established to finance the activities for the complete destruction of Syrian chemical weapons outside its territory. They are provided from the official development cooperation fund of the 2014 central budget.

Bulgaria's participation in the Trust Fund is an expression of our commitment to the international efforts to find a solution to the Syrian conflict. The destruction of the chemical weapons of Damascus will contribute to the greater security of the Syrian population and create prerequisites for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict, as well as a subsequent recovery of the country. This would prevent the further increase of the flow of Syrian citizens,  seeking asylum in other countries, and provide the necessary conditions for the return of the refugees to their homes.
