Kristian Vigenin: All political parties in Egypt should exercise responsibility

16 August 2013 News

“We are deeply concerned about the developments in Egypt, and we believe that there is no alternative to constructive political dialogue to achieve peace and stability. We sincerely regret the numerous victims in the recent demonstrations and call upon all political and social forces to exercise prudence, temperance and responsibility for the future of the country.” This was said by Minister of Foreign Affairs Vigenin today at a meeting with the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Bulgaria.

Ambassador Manal El Shinnawi said that ensuring security is the main task of the Egyptian authorities. She said that the first step required towards the restoration of the democratic political process was the cessation of violence by supporters of former President Morsi.

Minister Vigenin urged the authorities in Egypt to exercise due restraint towards protesters and to prevent violence. “Although it is difficult at the moment to determine who is to blame for the escalation of the situation, the interim government and security forces are the ones responsible for peaceful conduct of the situation. Fixed-term measures are essential to prevent new conflicts and to minimize the risk of onset of civil war,” he said.

Kristian Vigenin hoped that stabilitywould soon be restored in the country and expressed readiness to assist in developing a common position of the foreign ministers of the European Union in support of the restoration of the democratic process. “We remain open to dialogue on future measures to resolve the crisis in Egypt,” he said.
