Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hristo Dikanski officially presented the candidacy of Dr. Dimana Dramova as a member of the United Nations Commission on International Law for a mandate 2028-2032 to the heads of the diplomatic missions of the UN member states in Sofia.
The nomination of Dr. Dramova by the Bulgarian government is an expression of our country's consistent commitment to strengthening the international legal order and to the progressive development and codification of international law.
In her address to the diplomatic corps, Deputy Minister Dikanski expressed confidence that the combination of practical experience and academic work will be a solid basis for Dr. Dramova's contribution to the Commission's activities. Dr. Dramova is a lawyer with recognized competence in the field of international law and over twenty years of professional experience in the Bulgarian diplomatic service. In addition, she carries out research and teaching and is the author of publications in the field of international law.
In her speech, Dr. Dramova stressed that if elected to the Commission, she would be guided by the positions of the countries, with respect for their choice, and independent and impartial judgement. She outlined three main priorities: greater clarity on the legal nature and implications of the commitments that countries make; practical responses to challenges affecting their common interests; and results of the Commission's work that are useful and relevant in the practice of countries. Dr. Dramova also stressed that the Commission should support the building of agreement between the countries on issues on which common positions are still being formed.
In conclusion, she stated her willingness to work in a personal capacity and independently, with respect for the different legal traditions and with attention to issues of common interest to countries from all regions.
The official presentation is part of the campaign to provide support for the Bulgarian application. The elections for members of the Commission will be held in 2027 in the framework of the Eighty-second session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
