03 June 2026 News

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivanka Tasheva participated as a panellist in the side event entitled “The Transformative Impact of OECD Accession”, held on 2 June in Paris as part of the Annual Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Membership of the OECD is a strong indication of a country’s commitment to democracy, the market economy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights. The aspiration to join the Organisation places Bulgaria among those countries prepared to uphold the rules-based international order,” Deputy Minister Tasheva stated.

She further underlined that Bulgaria regards the OECD accession process as an important driver of reforms and governance modernisation, as well as a means of enhancing the country’s international reputation and attractiveness to investors. Among the principal benefits of both the accession process itself and future membership, the Deputy Minister highlighted the strengthening of administrative capacity, the promotion of policies based on international best practices, closer interinstitutional cooperation, and improved efficiency of the public administration.

“The objective of OECD membership has been established as a national strategic priority, supported through policy continuity, effective interinstitutional coordination, and the active involvement of the business community, academia and civil society,” Deputy Minister Tasheva emphasised in her remarks. She added that transparent communication regarding the objectives and benefits of membership contributes to public trust and demonstrates that reforms deliver tangible benefits for citizens, businesses and the country’s development.

The event was opened by OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann and featured senior representatives of the Organisation’s accession candidate countries as panellists, namely Argentina, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Peru, Romania, Thailand and Croatia. Participants shared their perspectives on the work of the OECD, the progress achieved in their respective accession processes, examples of good practice, and their expectations regarding the benefits of future membership.
