Bulgaria is following with attention and concern the recent events in Egypt. The sharp polarization in society is leading to a dangerous erosion of social order and political stability. As a country that supports the values of democracy, we call on all political and social forces to strive for the earliest possible restoration of peace and stability in the country.
We condemn violence and express our condolences to the relatives of those killed in the clashes. We urge the parties to maintain prudence, restraint and responsibility regarding the future of Egypt. We hope that at this critical period for the country, social peace can be preserved and that there will be no backtracking from the work done in the framework of the democratic transition.
We expect that in the shortest possible time, the normal political process, based on the democratic principles of a constitutional state, will be restored.
