Meeting of the Director General for Bilateral Relations with the Ambassador of Iran

06 April 2026 News

Today, 6 April, the Director General for Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Petko Doykov, held talks with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Bulgaria, H.E. Ali Reza Irvash, within the framework of the regular bilateral dialogue. During the meeting, the Iranian Ambassador once again raised the issue of the purpose of the American aircraft stationed at Vasil Levski Airport. Ambassador Doykov reaffirmed that the Republic of Bulgaria is not participating in the war; the aircraft are not used for combat operations; and no combat aircraft involved in hostilities either overfly or refuel in Bulgarian airspace.

Bulgaria once again expressed its firm disagreement with the launching of strikes by Iran against the Gulf states and called on Iran to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Both sides expressed a shared intention to keep communication channels open in the future.
