“On this day, we honour not only the saving of human lives, but also the memory of the victims – a memory to which we must continually return and whose remembrance we must not allow to fade,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nadezhda Neynski, during her participation in the ceremony marking the 83rd anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War. By tradition, 10 March is commemorated each year with the laying of flowers at the Monument of Gratitude in the St Kliment Ohridski Garden.
In her address, Minister Neynski emphasised that this day reminds us of the power of human solidarity, civic responsibility and moral choice in defence of human life and dignity. Drawing on her personal experience from a visit years ago to Yad Vashem, she noted that the commemoration of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews is both an act of tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and an expression of gratitude to all those who, under exceptionally difficult historical circumstances, contributed to this heroic act. Minister Neynski underscored the importance of preserving historical memory and passing it on to future generations as a vital safeguard against the recurrence of such tragedies.
The ceremony, jointly organised by the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria 'Shalom' and Sofia Municipality, was attended by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Ms Iliana Iotova, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Natalia Kiselova, Members of Parliament, representatives of the executive and local authorities, representatives of the Jewish community in Bulgaria, public figures, citizens, and members of the diplomatic corps.
In accordance with a decision of the Council of Ministers of 19 February 2003, Bulgaria commemorates on 10 March each year the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and of crimes against humanity.
