On 1 March 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nadezhda Neynski participated in an extraordinary video conference meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, which discussed the situation in the Middle East.

The foreign ministers expressed strong concern about the escalation of military strikes in the region and the consequences for regional and European security. Strong support was expressed for the EU's partners in the Gulf following the strikes on Iran. The need to uphold the principles of international law and the UN Charter was reaffirmed. The need for a return to the negotiating table and for Iran to comply with all its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was emphasized. The ministers exchanged information on the diplomatic contacts held so far with the countries in the region and committed to continuing close coordination among themselves, including with regard to the security of European citizens and their evacuation.

In her statement, Minister Neynski emphasized that we are facing a completely new situation in the Middle East, with potential negative consequences for the region and Europe. It is necessary to convince the new Iranian leadership of the need to return to the negotiating table and abandon its nuclear program and ballistic missile development program, as well as to stop supporting Russian military aggression against Ukraine. Minister Nayski expressed her support for a joint meeting of EU foreign ministers and the Gulf Cooperation Council. The top priority remains the safety of our citizens in the region and their evacuation.
