Minister Georg Georgiev Meets with Minister for European Affairs of the Czech Repub-lic, Martin Dvořák
12 June 2025 NewsMinister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev held a meeting with the Minister for European Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr Martin Dvořák.
The two ministers highly praised the state of bilateral cooperation between their countries and discussed opportunities for deepening engagement across various areas of mutual interest, both on a bilateral level and within international organisations.
The discussions addressed key topics on the current European agenda, support for Ukraine, and the enlargement of the European Union. Both sides underscored the importance of adhering to the principle of own merits in fulfilling the conditions and commitments undertaken in the EU enlargement process.
Minister Georgiev informed Minister Dvořák of Bulgaria’s receipt of the positive convergence report for entry into the euro area.
“Bulgaria has a clear plan to adopt the euro as of 1 January 2026,” Minister Georgiev affirmed.
Minister Dvořák congratulated Bulgaria on its determination and successful fulfilment of all convergence criteria.
The meeting took place on the opening day of the GLOBSEC forum.
The chief diplomat emphasised that, in today’s increasingly complex geopolitical environment, maintaining unity between Bulgaria and the Czech Republic – both EU and NATO Member States – remains our greatest strength.
The growing instability, global challenges, and strategic competition underline the need for joint efforts and the formulation of unified positions at EU level.
The two ministers also discussed other important issues related to security in the Black Sea region, the EU Black Sea Strategy, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and the enlargement of the European Union.
In this context, Minister Georgiev stressed: “Bulgaria consistently highlights the vital role of the Black Sea region in maintaining security, economic stability, and energy transit routes.”
The GLOBSEC forum has been held annually in Bratislava since 2006. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the world’s most prominent conferences connecting politics, academia, civil society, and business.
This year, discussions are organised around five key thematic areas: European integration; defence and security in the transatlantic space; technologies — both aid and threat; sustainable development and the global economy; and the challenges to democracy and the liberal order.
The Czech Republic is one of Bulgaria’s leading trading partners in Central Europe. A Working Group on Economic Cooperation was established in 2004. Its ninth session took place in Prague on 28 April 2022.
