The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, took part today in the informal meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, held in Antalya. The meeting is part of the preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in The Hague (24-25 June this year), during which the Alliance is expected to take a number of key decisions.
In his statement, Minister Georgiev highlighted the strategic importance of the Black Sea and the Western Balkans—regions of particular significance for Bulgaria. "As a Black Sea state, Bulgaria is committed to the security and freedom of navigation in the region, including through initiatives such as the Black Sea mine countermeasures group," stated Minister Georgiev. He further emphasised that given the serious security threats in the Black Sea region, there is a need for enhanced deterrence and defence visibility on NATO’s part.
During discussions among the foreign ministers of the Alliance, the need for a gradual increase in defence spending was underlined, with the aim of ensuring a more equitable sharing of burdens and responsibilities, and strengthening the Allies’ collective defence capabilities. The ministers also stressed the importance of reinforcing the transatlantic bond. The meeting further addressed the need to ensure long-term support for Ukraine.
